Communication

22-August-2017
Stephanie, Kathryn, Brent, Mieke, Janet, Dane, Nate and your families,

I cannot believe that it has been a month since I have sent out an official update, but most of you have been visiting/messaging/emailing or seeing the pictures and videos on Facebook. However I want to provide some more updates.
All of the puppies are doing great.
  1. They are getting big, all are over 8 lbs and several are over 9 lbs.
  2. They have received their third deworming and first shots; you can see the details on the litter page. They will get one more of each the day before you pick them up.
  3. They are, for the most part completely weaned from Penny, they still try to fed from her, but she only lets them for a minute or two. The puppies have been eating dry kibble for several days.
  4. I did Puppy Aptitude Testing (http://www.volhard.com/pages/pat.php) and an initial birdiness testing this past weekend. We will discuss the results when you pick up your puppy. I encourage you read about the testing.
This weekend Shellie is coming down to do the Show Evaluations and on Sunday the owner’s of the stud dogs will be visiting the puppies; the puppies will also be getting their ID Chips implanted on Sunday.

Once we have all of the results in, we will start the process of deciding which puppy we will be offering to each family and I will be letting you know during the first part of the week.

We are still waiting for the DNA results to arrive, they should be coming in any day now.

A few notes about pickup day, Sunday September 3rd. When I talk to each of you I will be working with you to determine what time you will be able to stop by and pick up your new family member, I will need to stagger the times so that I only have one family here at a time.

I will have a bunch of stuff for you including enough puppy kibble to last you several days (long enough to transition to another food if you will not be using Acana Puppy (https://acana.com/our-foods/heritage/puppy-junior/?lang=in)).

You should also consider bringing a collar (for sizing purposes, the puppies currently have a neck circumference of about 9 in.) and a leash (preferably not as retractable as it is has harder to control the puppy vs a standard 6 ft leash).

For the ride home, it is best if you have a dog carrier to hold the puppy in. Some of you have longer drives so I’m sure that you will also be holding your puppy too. A quick note, if you need to stop while you have the puppy in the car, please do not let it out and on the ground at gas stations or rest stops or other heavily trafficked areas as the puppies have not had all of their shots yet. If you need to walk your puppy, please find a quieter spot, maybe a higher end hotel and walk them there.

I hope that you are all thinking of the puppies names; the everyday name and the AKC name.

One last thing, it is time for me to ask for the balance. I will be sending out the money request again, if that did not work for you last time, please send me a check so that it gets here by Monday.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

The puppies are now three weeks old and doing great, only six more weeks to go before they go to there forever homes.

As you have all read on Penny site, in addition to the regular name you will give your puppy; you also have to pick an AKC Registration name. We would like to have the entire litter choose AKC names centered around the litter's theme of 'Currency'. So anything related to that is fair game, some example are Euro, Lira, Franc, Looney, Peso, Yen, Rand, Gold, Silver. The format will be "Caliah's xxxx".

For reference, Penny's name is "Caliah's Lotus Blossom Falls" and the theme was waterfalls.

As I want to share the sample contract with you, I first need to explain one twist to this litter. When we planned this litter we have several dogs in mind that would make a great pairing with Penny. It turned out that two of the dogs live with the same family in Murrieta, CA. We decided that we wanted to use both dogs so this litter of puppies may have two 'puppy daddies'. We have already completed and sent DNA samples to the AKC for analysis. Prior to picking up your puppy Labor Day weekend, we SHOULD know which dog is the father of each of the puppies. Penny is a well titled Brittany, but both of the sires, Chayce and Harley have even more wins in the Show ring. By the way, Chayce and Harley are litter mates, so everything on the website like the pedigree are completely accurate.

With that out of the way, please read through the attached sample of the Caliah Brittanys Puppy Contract and let us know if you have any questions or concerns.

Starting the first weekend in August, we will be 'socializing' the puppies with people, this means that if you are able to visit, you will be able to interact and play with the puppies. There will still be a requirement to take some precautions like using hand sanitizer and spraying your feet/socks with a mild hydrogen peroxide solution before entering the puppy pen.

One last thing, several of you have asked what books we recommend for learning best practices for raising a puppy, I just shipped (via Amazon) the two books that we recommend., you should be receiving them on Tuesday.

Please let me know when you can come visit the puppies.

A quick update then a request.

The puppies are doing great. They are gain weight, their eyes are opening and they are learning how to walk.

Here is a a graph of the minimum, maximum and average weights of the litter since they were born.

As all of the puppies are doing well, it is time to ask for deposits. I will be sending each of you a request from Wells Fargo, please take care of the deposit by Wednesday, if you have any questions please let us know. As a reminder the deposit is $500 and in not refundable unless we are not able to provide you with a puppy. The total cost is $1,500, so I will request the final $1,000 about a week before you pickup your puppy.

We want to welcome each of you and your families to the extended Caliah Brittanys family. We are very excited that we have found seven great homes for Penny's first litter of puppies!

Instead of sharing another picture of the puppies, we thought that it would be better to share the 'Penny Puppy Cam' that we are running.

http://pennyblossom.info/puppyCam.html

Right now the puppies do three things; Eat, Sleep & Scoot around. Each of the puppies has been assigned a color; Orange, Red & Pink for the three girls and Blue, Green, Grey & Black for the four boys (Pink's collar has been lost, but we will be making new ones when all of the puppies out grow their current ones).

Here is a map of where the Penny Puppies will be living:

That is it for now, please let us know if you have any questions.

Today is another milestone day, we did an X-ray and confirm that is carrying puppies.

We have been estimating that the puppies will be delivered next Sunday July 3rd, but the vet said that they may be here before then (so maybe Saturday). Either way, we are getting close!

Penny is doing great. As would be expected she is eating and sleeping more than normal and it is showing as she is getting HUGE but we are still doing our daily 5k walks.

I will be heading to Carlsbad tomorrow, if you would like to meet Penny and her half brother, we will be at the grass park on the corner of Carlsbad Blvd and Beech Ave, next to the Army Navy Academy at 11AM. Please let me know if you plan to meet us there.

We have started setting up her whelping box and she is already making it her own.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

It's been awhile since I provided an update on Penny.

Penny was in a couple of shows over Memorial Weekend. On the first day she earned 'Best Female Brittany'. You can see her winning photo below (with her handler Katelyn and the Judge). On another day, she earned an 'Award of Merit' (kind of a third place female).

We have received a couple in questions about the ultrasound that we had tentatively scheduled for the early June. We ended up not doing one, so we do not yet have confirmation that she is carrying puppies.

That said, Penny has been showing several signs that she is carrying puppies; loss of appetite for a while, she has been extra affectionate and in the last few days it appears that her belly is starting to get a little bit bigger. We have already scheduled a pre-whelping vet visit for June 24th as we are planning on her delivering puppies over July 4th weekend.

We hope that you all are as excited about Penny’s maiden litter as we are. Have a great couple of weeks.

As always, if you have any questions, please let us know.

Good evening everyone,

We have more exciting news, actually it is probably the second (or maybe third) most exciting announcement that we can be making (after confirming that she is pregnant and the birth of the puppies).

Penny Blossom has been at the home of the sire for the past week and has been breeding with Chayce. Chayce is a fantastic dog and is well titled.

Here is the official announcement of the breeding:

Caliah Brittanys, in conjunction with David Webb, are thrilled to announce a breeding between GCH CH Caliah's Lotus Blossom Falls JHA "Penny Blossom" (River x Pebbles) and GCHB CH Sanbar's Standing Ovation "Chayce" (Jonnie x Lexie). Both are beautifully marked, moderately-sized Brittanys with dear temperaments.

If everything goes as planned, the puppies will be born around the Fourth of July and would be ready to go home Labor Day weekend.

Penny's website has been updated with the announcement, photos Chayce a three generation pedigree, a timeline and some other details.

As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

Hello everyone,

I have some news, actually three exciting announcements.

First, Penny Blossom is in the first couple of days of her heat cycle, we will be taking her to be bred next Tuesday. I am sure that your next question is 'When will the puppies be here?'. If everything goes well, the puppies should be born in the beginning of July.

Second, Caliah Brittanys has been confirmed as a Breeder of Merit by the American Kennel Club (AKC). Breeders of Merit have shown that they are dedicated to breeding beautiful purebred dogs whose appearance, temperament, and ability are true to their breed.

And finally we have created a 'Puppy Process' page on Pennys website (http://pennyblossom.info/ and click on 'Puppies') that explains the basic steps to purchasing a puppy from Caliah Brittanys and addresses several commonly asked questions.

If you have any questions for us, please let us know. If the answer would provide value to everyone, we will update the commonly asked questions section of the website.

Good morning and Happy National Puppy Day!

I just wanted to touch base and let you know that we are still waiting for Penny to come into heat. Once she does, the puppies should be arrive about 75 days later and then they would spend between 8 and 9 weeks with mommy Penny before going home. At this time, the earliest that they would be able to go home is early August.

I know that most of you have checked out Penny's website (http://pennyblossom.info), but have you taken a look at the Caliah Brittanys (http://caliahbrittanys.com) page? This is the kennel and breeding program that Penny is from. It is run by Mary Brown and Shellie Sytsma. Penny's breeding is being done under the umbrella of Caliah Brittanys and with the assistance of Mary and Shellie. Lots of great information about the other dogs in the program including Penny's Sire, River.

Please remember that myself, Shellie and Mary are here to answer any questions that you, just let us know.
