Penny Blossom is my girl. I bought her half-brother, Ronin from Mary Brown in 2008, the result of an oopsie breeding to the neighbor dog. I love Ronin. Six years later I was starting to think about a second dog and, out of the blue, Mary called to tell me that she had bred Pebbles again and was curious if I might be interested in a full Brittany, who would just happen to be a half-sister to my current dog. She sure was right. It did not take me long to say yes.
I was interested in an orange and white female as I wanted to breed her someday as an experience for the neighborhood children, whom I adore. Mary and Shellie Systma sold me the little one from
Caliah Brittanys first litter and I named her Penny Blossom (more on her name in a minute).
Mary and Shellie asked if I would be willing to show in the confirmation ring if they helped me get started; on her first weekend in the show ring as a nine month old, she was entered in the Bred-by-Exhibitor class with Shellie, she won her first four point major with a Best of Winners. It was all an interesting experience for a newbie like myself to watch all of the comings and goings of a dog show. I had no idea then that I would end up where I am today. I've even taught myself how to create my first iOS application to calculate points earned at a dog shows.
So I hired some handlers and got her shown to her championship and then, why not? Let's go for her grand! Well all of that happened and I now have a Grand Champion Caliah Lotus Blossom Falls, JH. Yes, I was able to get her junior hunter on her over one weekend, a process she and I both really enjoyed.
Penny will continue in the show ring at select shows, she will also start working in the field and might even try agility in the future. Next year I will likely be breeding her.
After all of that, however, Penny is my pet. I take her for long hikes in the hills, she sleeps on the couch next to me and she cruises around town with me. I co-own Penny with my neighbors, the Maynard's, who cares for her whenever I'm not available and Shellie Sytsma from
Caliah Brittanys.
A good bit of thought went into naming Penny Blossom, as I could not decide on a name I got the assistance of the Maynards, as they are co-owners. We have it down to six choices; Penny, Blossom, Mikao, Lucy, Annie & Tessa. As you can see from the scorecard, Blossom and Penny were the top two, so why not combine them...
